For what it is worth, one of my observations (not exactly revelatory), is that great divisions between people start when micro sized issues are allowed into otherwise solid relationships. These intrusions develop into wedges. Seemingly insignificant wedges can drive apart even the greatest of relationships.
I would suggest; make sure the division is worth the intrusion, and/or, the intrusion is worth the division. Sometimes relationships are lost forever over foolishness and relationships always suffer when someone chooses the insignificant over the essential.
A good example of this is moisture in a rock.

When moisture accumulates in a small rock fissure, it will contract and expand with the changing temperatures. Over a period of time great slabs of rock will split away from the rest of the formation.
Likewise, a wedge that is driven into an object, whether wood or stone, will eventually tear it apart.
At any stage, our divisive ideas and critical words and repugnant actions can split us apart. Once a division takes place, the chance of restoration is limited and total recovery is impossible, aside from an exceptional work of Divine intervention.
