08/19/13 IDENTIFY THE VOICES

08/19/13 IDENTIFY THE VOICES

Listening to "voices in your head" can either lead you closer to God or further from Him. It will depend on the nature and origin of the voices.

Sometimes people think the voice they are hearing, listening to is the voice of God, though it is not.
It could be the voice of Satan (or demons), impersonating God, through false teaching or spiritual leading (2 Co. 11:13-15), or
it could be your own voice (Je. 17:9; Jn. 2:24-25; 1 Co. 3:18; He. 3:12-14).
In either case, the voice will lead you to do or think or say something you should not (Ja. 1:14-15; 2 Pe. 3:17).

This is why we should "try the spirits," (1 Jn. 4:1).
Here are steps you should take, to filter out the voices of deception and hear the voice of God...
Know Jesus (intimately).
Follow the Holy Spirit (consistently).
Read God's word (prayerfully).
Listen to godly preaching/teaching (submissively).
Seek godly counsel (humbly).
Maintain godly friendships (eagerly).
Read about godly people (discerningly).

Remember, God will not tell you anything that contradicts His word or His nature (Lk. 21:33), therefore knowing God and His word is essential to knowing the truth. The sooner you start to receive the voice of God, and the more consistent you are in obeying Him, the easier it will be to know the truth (Jn. 8:32).

2 Corinthians 11:13-15
(13) For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
(14) And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
(15) Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Jeremiah 17:9

(9) The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

John 2:24-25
(24) But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,
(25) And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

1 Corinthians 3:18
(18) Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.

Hebrews 3:12-14
(12) Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
(13) But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
(14) For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

James 1:14-15
(14) But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
(15) Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

2 Peter 3:17-18
(17) Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
(18) But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

1 John 4:1
(1) Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
DLG note... the word, "try" means to, "test."

Luke 21:33

(33) Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

John 8:31-32
(31) Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
(32) And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
